A college prep and retention program so that graduation is more than just a dream.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and to learn something new. ” — Barack Obama
Welcome to the College Preparatory Program at The Booker T. Washington Learning Center, where we are dedicated to empowering high school students from East Harlem to overcome the challenges associated with poverty and become successful first-generation college students.

In East Harlem, where high school graduation rates, employment opportunities, literacy rates, and college attendance percentages are lower than the national average, our program is a beacon of hope for students and families seeking a brighter future. Youth in East Harlem must contend with community violence and crime, failing schools, dilapidated housing, high rates of homelessness, unemployment and academic disruption. If they do not have a parent, sibling, mentor or neighbor to encourage, guide and provide adequate resources, the dream of college may be impossible. We make the impossible possible.

We understand that the journey to college can be daunting, especially for students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. That's why our program goes beyond traditional college prep to provide comprehensive support and guidance every step of the way. We begin during the freshman year of high school and walk young people through their entire journey. One of the key features of our program is our commitment to staying with students throughout their college journey, from application to graduation. We recognize that the transition to college and the challenges of higher education can be overwhelming, and we are here to provide ongoing support, mentorship, and resources to ensure our students succeed.

Our program offers a range of parent and student workshops designed to equip families with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the college application process, financial aid options, academic planning, some college coursework, and more. By engaging both students and parents in this journey, we create a strong support network that empowers students to reach their full potential.

In addition to workshops, our program provides personalized academic advising, college readiness courses, test preparation, college campus visits, financial aid assistance, and internship opportunities to help students build a competitive profile for college admissions and success.

At The Booker T. Washington Learning Center, we believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for a brighter future. Join us in empowering the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and change-makers as they pursue their dreams and make a positive impact on their communities and the world. We believe that when the first student in a family attends and completes college, the gate is opened up for generations to follow.
